Use Wi-Fi without activating phone

Shambhu, When you were testing the Samsung S390G, do you happen to remember (or know) if the Wi-Fi capabilities work without activating the phone? Weird question, I know, but I really DO have a reason for knowing.

Hi Cliff,

Yes, I actually did exactly that because I decided I would use the phone for a giveaway. I didn't want the person who got it to go through the hassle of having to get a new SIM card to re-activate the phone.

Web access through WiFi worked fine. I think that's true of pretty much any phone that has WiFi. For example, I'm done with testing the Galaxy Precedent, so it's no longer active. It can still connect over WiFi, so the kids still sometimes use it to play games and watch videos.

BTW, I don't know what you want to use your S390g for, but one advantage it has is that it can play YouTube videos over WiFi, while the LG 840g has no YouTube player.

Regards,

Minutes...
by: Cliff

You are, of course, correct. When I initially wrote this I thought I would lose those accumulated minutes. When I DID upgrade my phone, they all switched over as you indicated.

Minutes Rollover
by: Katherine

I do not understand your concern about losing minutes from your older TF phone. When you upgrade to a newer model, TF of course, all "old" minutes rollover including end of service date to your new phone. You also are able to keep your phone number unless your change your location out of network.

S390G
by: Cliff

Well, I have a Tracfone currently, and was considering upgrading to the S390G but figured I'd lose my current Hours&Time AND wasn't sure if I'd like the WiFi surfing. But frankly, they are so cheap and so available, I figured if I got one and experimented with the WiFi, I could decide whether to upgrade AND with the Triple Minutes for life, it wouldn't take very long to recoup those minutes. If I didn't like the S390G for some reason, I'd NOT upgrade, and just use the Samsung for a "Traveling Wifi"
