Samsung Magnet GoPhone

Attractive Orange Qwerty Keyboard Phone

The Samsung Magnet GoPhone from AT&T is a candy bar style Qwerty-keyboard phone with Bluetooth connectivity, web capability, and a VGA camera. You can get the Samsung Magnet - GoPhone - Prepaid (Refurbished) - Orange for $59.99 directly from AT&T.

Qwerty Keyboard

The Qwerty keyboard has real buttons. The left hand side also functions as the number keys which are laid out in the 3 x 3 format with the zero in the traditional place below the 8.

Of course, you only need to use these keys when you calling someone who’s not already in your phonebook or using something like a calculator. The width of the phone itself is 2.32 inches, so you can say that the keyboard is about 2 inches wide. However, the keys are fairly well-laid out and give the impression of being able to stand up to frequent use for . . .

Messaging

You can send traditional text and picture messages. You can also easily insert video and sound clips into your messages, however you can store too many videos as you have to rely on the phones internal memory

With the web capability, you can also do instant messaging using your AOL, Windows Live or Yahoo Messenger accounts.

You can even go the “old-fashioned” route and send and receive email.

VGA Camera

The Samsung Magnet GoPhone comes with a VGA. This is kind of disappointing if you wanted the Magnet to be your everyday picture taking device, but it’ll do fine for a quick snapshot if you’ve left your regular camera behind.

At least the snaps won’t use up as much airtime when you send them via picture message. If you’re not in a rush, you can download them via Bluetooth or via USB using a data cable.

Web Stuff

EDGE Network

The Samsung Magnet GoPhone can operate on AT&T’s EDGE network which is supposed to provide high-speed data transfer (for a mobile phone, anyway).

WAP Protocol

Web surfing is via the WAP protocol so you can realistically only surf site with mobile templates designed for cell phone users.

Basic Features

Screen

The 2.2 inch display screen (176 x 220 pixel resolution) is pretty good for sending and receiving all your various kinds of messages.

Size and Weight

By using the open face candy bar type format, there are no extra moving parts to break down and it also helps keep the weight to 3.09 ounces. The attractive red/orange rubbery back gives it a feeling (and hopefully the reality) of reliability.

Battery Life

Battery life on the 800 mAH cell is pretty good at 5 hours talk time and 10 days standby time as long as you don’t fiddle with it too much, which is something I tend to do.

500-entry address book

The Samsung Magnet has a 500-entry address book, which is about average these days and is enough for most people.

Productivity Tools

The Samsung Magnet GoPhone comes with the usual assortment of basic productivity tools such as a calendar/personal organizer, alarm clock etc.

Non-Productivity Tools

When you don't feel like being productive, you have games, puzzles, sports action, and more. You can, of course, download MP3 ringtones, choose answer-back tones, etc.
