Choosing a Net10 phone
Search This Site:
When deciding on a Net10 phone, you used to have a few choices, but now a few slightly fancier phones are available. The current selection includes four camera phone (Motorola C261, Motorola W375, LG225, and LG600) and quite a few plain old flip phones, some quite attractive. Though I wish the flip phones (like the Motorola V176 or V171) did not need awkward pointy antennas, They are still more convenient than the non-flip phones because you don't end up accidentally pressing their buttons if you put them in your pocket or purse.
So once you've checked out their coverage and their plan (a flat 10 cents per minute), you can check out their phones.
Motorola Net10 Phones
You can choose from quite a few different Motorola models.Motorola EM326gMP3 Music Player and Megapixel Camera The Bluetooth slider phone has an mp3 music player and a 1.3 megapixel camera. EM326g Review.Motorola W408gMP3 Music Player and Megapixel Camera Bluetooth flip phone with mp3 music player and megapixel camera. The latest version of the Razr-like phone is the successor to the W377g.Motorola W377g
The model adds Bluetooth headset capability to the W375. A camera and an FM radio are notable. W377g Review. Motorola V171 or V176Attractive flip phones with color LCD displays. The slightly newer V176 has a larger screen. On the other hand, with the V171 you can compose your own ringtones when you're bored. With the V176 I guess they expect you to download them instead. The cost is around $30 for a reconditioned V176 plus a 600 minute card. Motorola V176 Review.Motorola C139 A "non-flip" or open-face model. Pretty much the same set of features. As ubiquitous as water.Motorola C261 Smart looking camera phone with VGA resolution camera. Good enough for emailing or just looking at on the phone. Costs $29.99. Motorola W375 With a fairly stylish Razr-like look, the W375 has a VGA-resolution camera and is a pretty good deal. You can get a Motorola W375 with 300 minutes and free shipping for only $39.99!
Nokia Net10 phones
Net10 no longer offers Nokia phones, but these used to be the choices in Nokia Net10 handsets.Nokia 1100 or Nokia 1112(Update: Finally discontinued new but you can may still be able to get reconditioned ones)The workhorses of the prepaid phone industry. Reliable and, like the C139, if you drop it and it breaks, you just get another. A reconditioned version costs $19.99. The Nokia 1112 looks a little nicer. Nokia 1600Another good Net10 cell phone. This adds some nice features, including a color display to the Nokia 1100. Here's my brief Nokia 1600 review. You could once get a reconditioned Nokia 1600 phone and 300 minutes of airtime for just $29.99 . Or you can get an even better deal because you get the Nokia 1600 free when you buy a $30 airtime card. And since the Nokia 1600 includes 300 minutes upon activation, you get a phone and 600 minutes for $30, which works out to 5 cents a minute plus a phone. And, again, when you add the $30 airtime card bundle you get an additional 60 days of service, so this package should be good for 120 days. Nokia 2600This actually seems to have fewer features than the 1600, almost as if it's been stripped down. Note this may not be a bad thing in a cell phone. After all, you've bought it to talk.
LG Phones
LG 900gThe LG 900g has a vertically-oriented keyboard and features "fast web browsing" to go with a 2.0 megapixel camera and music player.LG 620g Bluetooth slider phone with MP3 music player and 1.3 MP camera. LG 620g review.LG 600g This is a Bluetooth capable camera phone with FM radio and voice recorder which sells for about $30 when it is available. LG600 ReviewLG 400g The LG400 is a basic flip phone with nice big buttons which should make it convenient to use. However, I don't currently recommend this phone. See my LG 400 review. Costs about $25.LG 320g Basic candy-bar style phone. See my LG 320g review.LG 300g This is a basic phone. You can talk and text, and it costs about $25. It is now offered along with a $25 750-minute card plus 300 minutes upon activation. Has a protruding antenna which makes it not so attractive but possibly performs a little better. Good deal.LG 225This stylish flip phone was one of the first camera phones available for Net10
Samsung Phones
Samsung T201g The first Net10 Samsung phone is another basic flip phone. One reason I don't recommend this is its small 100 entry phone book. Read the full T201g review which also includes other options. Costs $39.99.On the other hand . . .
Samsung T401g
The second Samsung phone offered, the T401g, has a compelling set of features, including a QWERTY keyboard for texting, a 1.3 megapixel camera, an MP3 player, and Bluetooth capability. Calls still cost ten cents or less per minute, but text messages only cost 0.3 minutes each rather than the usual 0.5 minutes currently for all other Net10 phones. The Samsung T404g is the successor to the T401g and comes with a two-megapixel camera. It is priced the same as teh T401g but is not yet offered with an airtime card bundle.
