Boss sent text this a.m. while I had phone in hand...but it didn't show up or give ring notice. Wasn't until I checked messages that I found text had arrived 15 minutes earlier....
This is a brand new phone just purchased yesterday....what do I need to check. (It also misses about every third call...)

You shouldn't be missing calls unless you're in an area with holes in coverage. I tested this model a couple of years ago, and I didn't experience these problems. I'm in Northern VA myself. Since this is a GSM phone, your phone could be on either the AT&T or T-Mobile networks depending on what SIM card is in the phone. If your signal is poor, you can try calling customer support and see if that would be solved by sending you a different SIM card for the phone.
Regarding the text messages, while they do sometimes get delayed (like email does), you should certainly see an alert on your phone when they arrive. You can check the sound profile of your phone by going to Menu > Settings > Sound Profile and making sure that the message alert volume is not set to zero.
However, even if the message alert volume is too low, when a message comes in, you should still get an alert on the external screen or main screen if your phone happens to be flipped open.
This phone has been out for a while now. While there have been a couple of glitches noted in certain situations, I don't recall problems receiving texts as being one of them.
I guess you best bet is to contact Tracfone's customer support. Sorry I can't be of more help.
