What about Liberty Wireless?

Search This Site:

While doing your research you may come upon Liberty Wireless. Is it a good option?

Liberty Wireless is a small company that offers some attractive rates and phones at the higher end of prepaid cell phone service.

It is another so-called "mobile virtual network provider", not unlike Tracfone or Virgin Mobile. That is, they lease their networks from the other major carriers such as Sprint, Verizon etc.

Coverage

Their coverage looked good. In fact, it was Sprint's network, in this case. They do have a note that if you have a problem, you can't contact Sprint, you have to contact Liberty Wireless.

Rates and Plans

Liberty Wireless plans start at $30 a month for 300 minutes and a flat 10 cents/minute for any minutes over 300. So we're talking a minimum of $360 a year.

The most expensive plans costs $100 a month for 2000 minutes (5 cents a minute), but overages cost 20 cents per minute. In between there are a bunch of different options, such as plans with unlimited nights and weekend. They even have "Top Two" plans, starting at $40/month, which allow unlimited calls to and from two designated numbers, a minimalist version of those family and friends plans.

You don't have to pay an activation fee.

Phones

Liberty Wireless is one of the few prepaid cell phone carriers which offer significant rebates on the cost of phones.

For example they have 3 basic phones that are free after rebates ranging from $35 to $50. A basic camera phone, the LG225, costs $59.99 after a $75 mail-in-rebate. Even a Sanyo Katana costs only $99.99 after a $100 mail-in-rebate. The Katana has a 1.3 megapixel camera, so if you want a better camera phone with your prepaid cell phone service, and you're willing to pay a minimum of $30 per month then this might be your choice. You have to wait a while for the rebates.

Who are they?

Still I was curious about them. So I checked out the about page and saw that they are a subsidiary of TelePlus World, Corp., based in Miami, FL. Teleplus World is a publicly traded company, whose stock (as of 2/8/2007) goes for 8 cents a share. The company has 50 employees and revenue of 5 million last quarter, but about 8 million in all of 2005.

The other thing is that when you go to buy one of their phone, they say that the phones will be provided by InPhonic. InPhonic is a 300 million dollar a year company which has arrangement to lease networks from all the biggest network carriers such as, once again, Sprint, Cingular, Verizon etc., and then resells them to companies that want to be mobile virtual network operators (MVNO's).

So it would be a good guess that Liberty uses InPhonic's resources to be a MVNO, because they might be too small to have direct relationships with the likes of Verizon, Sprint, etc.

Summary

A pretty good set of plans.

While their small size may be a concern, without contracts, you're not locked in should there be any problems.
