What about Liberty Wireless?
Search This Site:
Liberty Wireless has evolved over the years to now offering one simple $50 unlimited no-contract plan to online customers. They even offer a free Samsung M800 phone with purchase of a $50 card to get you to try them out. If you find their stuff in retail stores then you can sign up for the regular prepaid plans. It is another so-called "mobile virtual network provider", not unlike Tracfone or Virgin Mobile. That is, they lease their networks from the other major carriers such as Sprint, Verizon etc.
Coverage on Sprint Network
You can check the Liberty Wireless coverage in your general area by entering your zip code. You don't see the street-level coverage, but you do see the coverage in your metropolitan area. If you want to estimate your street coverage, it will probably be similar to what you have for the variousSrpint Prepaid providers.
Rates and Plans
Liberty Wireless rates for their regular prepaid service are laid out in their FAQ:- $10 for 85 anytime minutes
- $20 for 500 anytime minutes
- $35 for 14 days unlimited voice, text and data
- $50 for 1 month unlimited voice, text and data
As mentioned above, they also have an unlimited monthly plan. For $50 a month, you get unlimited calling, texting, internet/data and email. There doesn't appear to be an activation fee.
Phones
Liberty Wireless currently (January 2012) offers one phone online: the Samsung M800 Instinct touchscreen phone. It is free with a $50 30-day unlimited airtime card purchase. If you're interested in getting this phone but with a regular prepaid plan, you can try Mingo Wireless or PlatinumTel.
Who are they?
Still I was curious about them. So I checked out the about page and saw that they are a subsidiary of TelePlus World, Corp., based in Miami, FL. Teleplus World is a publicly traded company, whose stock (as of 2/8/2007) went for 8 cents a share. The company had 50 employees and revenue of 5 million last quarter, but about 8 million in all of 2005.The other thing is that when you go to buy one of their phone, they say that the phones will be provided by InPhonic. InPhonic is a 300 million dollar a year company which has arrangement to lease networks from all the biggest network carriers such as, once again, Sprint, Cingular, Verizon etc., and then resells them to companies that want to be mobile virtual network operators (MVNO's). So it would be a good guess that Liberty uses InPhonic's resources to be a MVNO, because they might be too small to have direct relationships with the likes of Verizon, Sprint, etc.
Summary
While their small size may be a concern, without contracts, you're not locked so you could give them a try.
