On my LG840G Tracfone, when I get a message saying I have Voice Mail and try to retrieve it by calling voice mail, all I get is the greeting message that I have recorded. I am not able to retrieve the message left by the caller. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

I don't have an active 840g to test this, but this sounds like what would happen if you dialed your own phone number rather than the voicemail access number. If that's not the case, then I don't know what the problem can be. In any case, here are a couple of things you can try.
Two Options
First make sure you're calling the voicemail access number (which is different from your phone number). Perhaps this will fix the problem.
The second option relates to the method of accessing your messages from a landline. In this scenario, after dialing your own number from a landline you would
dial "*" or "#"
(varies depending on what network a phone uses), in order to access your voicemail and retrieve your messages. For this method to work, you do need to setup a voicemail password first.
