Ready to talk without limits?
You can choose from several no-contract Cricket phone plans ranging from $35 (sometimes as low as $25) per month up to $60 per month.

These plans are designed for those who use their phone a lot, but who don’t want a standard cell phone contract.

Cricket even offers a no-contract broadband solution for users on the go.

Coverage

Cricket is still officially a regional provider since they don't cover all 50 states, but the company is growing fast. If you're in their area, they offer a good no contract relatively inexpensive service. You can check out the cricket coverage, and see if Cricket is available in your area.

Extended Coverage

Cricket has an extended coverage area available on all plans $40 and higher which can save you roaming costs. However you do need a tri-band phone.

Phones

You can choose your Cricket Phones from a fairly large selection ranging from their most basic models to phones like the Razr2. You do get a web-only discount for buying your phone online plus a mail-in rebate, which is partially offset by a $15 activation fee. There are phones available from Kyocera, LG, Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung. A few of these are 3G phones.

Kyocera Phones

Cricket used to offer a number of Kyocera phones, the most prominent of them being the Kyocera Lingo.

You can still get the Cricket Kyocera S1300 which is a basic brick or candy-bar style phone with a 128 x 160 pixel screen. You can download games and ringtones, but I would skip the mobile web due to the small screen and slow download speed. It is light, however, weighing just 2.5 ounces.

Samsung Phones

Cricket carries a few Samsung phones including the R211, the Messager II, and the MyShot.

Plans

Now for the plans themselves. The plans go up gradually in price depending on how many kinds of unlimited minutes you need. If you only need your local minutes to be unlimited and are willing to pay extra for long distance and roaming, then you could opt for their cheapest $35 per month plan. For $60 per month, you can get almost everything unlimited: local and long distance minutes, sms and picture messaging, no roaming in Cricket coverage areas (you do get 200 non-Cricket coverage roaming minutes). Alaska is not included in these plans, but I guess Hawaii is.

Result

Generally, if you need a no-contract phone with a choice of the fancier phones, give them a try.

I am not a huge fan of Cricket service and plans, but it isn't horrible, either. It is great for people who cannot qualify credit-wise for a regular monthly ...
